What do you do if a team member raises a complaint of bullying or harassment? The worst thing you can do is ignore it and hope it goes away, or the staff “sort it out” amongst themselves.
Bullying at work occurs when:
- a person, or a group of people, repeatedly behaves unreasonably towards a worker or a group of workers, and
- the behaviour creates a risk to health and safety.
Bullying does not include reasonable management action carried out in a reasonable manner.
Having a bullying and harassment policy is an important starting point, as it sets out definitions and the investigative process in a guide for employers to follow; and is the “go to” document when an incident occurs.
